What Happened To Hulk & Black Widow’s Relationship In Avengers: Endgame?

And given the fact that she’s so guarded, we’re still not really sure if what we’ve seen so far is the “real” Widow, or just another mask that she’s wearing to suit her purposes. But aside from a few group moments and the first part of the movie, that’s pretty much all we see in terms of their connection. Despite what Avengers showed, their new relationship as a whole was one that seemed to come out of the blue, and it wasn’t exactly the most popular choice for a coupling. But weirdly enough, it’s a relationship that actually kind of… makes sense. There was definitely a romantic subplot being shared by Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson’s characters. The crappiness of the love story is not exactly a surprise, in context.

And when we finished it, we were like, “This is way more romantic and way more physical than it was when it was post-viz, or a mark on a suit on a platform. It suddenly became that the romance was way more front and center in it than I expected. Sun’s gettin’ real low.” I actually added that later in the game, I think something basically to get his attention and to have a phrase that he knows, this is about to start. I wanted to do as little with talking as possible, because it’s all going on there [points to his eyes], which is amazing, because two of those are not real — they were created by ILM, and yet they are so full of life.

He defected to the Soviet side and their paths crossed when Black Widow was trying to locate her adoptive father, Ivan Petrovich. It helps that the relationship with Hulk isn’t one that gets thrown together and stays in the same place; it’s a constantly evolving connection that’s about as messy as you’d expect from any two people trying to navigate their feelings. She was his next-door neighbor and sometime babysitter who he developed an infatuation with. Another of Black Widow’s close new partnerships was with a young hero known as Marigold.

We Didn’t Even See How It Started

Beyond his devastating broken engagement with Nat, Clint married Mockingbird, AKA Bobbi Morse. They were members of the West Coast Avengers together and fell in love on the job. Even though Black Widow and Hawkeye are trained agents, focused on missions and objectivity, Clint is arguably the more emotional of the two.

They’re both great characters, but they clearly didn’t match up right. Going forward, though, it is a good thing that Black Widow and the Hulk are no longer romantically interested in each other. Had their been some explanation to her mental recovery, their romance could have made a bit more sense.

However, as those of you who’ve seen Age of Ultron know, Barton is already married and has been hiding his wife and children from S.H.I.E.L.D. and the government all his life. Romanoff has seemingly always known about this, or at the very least for a long period of time, since Barton’s kids and wife welcome her with open arms. Rushman was rescued by Spider-Man, and the two felt a mutual attraction toward each other. However, both realized that something about the growing relationship didn’t feel right. Once her memory was restored, Black Widow admitted the feelings weren’t real, and she wasn’t interested in the wall-crawler. Black Widow and Hawkeye had an on-again, off-again relationship for a while after she joined the Avengers. However, when she retired as Black Widow, she discovered Hawkeye was too busy with the Avengers. The pair remained close friends and have reconciled quite a few times, but never in a lasting relationship.

In the beginning of Avengers, Black Widow is abruptly pulled off an assignment in Russia to recruit Bruce Banner to help find the stolen Tesseract. Speaking to Empire’s film podcast, writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus said there had been attempts to address it but ultimately filmrunners felt it would be “more elegant” to avoid it altogether. Decades later, in the 2004 CAPTAIN AMERICA series, it was revealed that Barnes actually survived the conflagration, salvaged by the Russians and turned into a sleeper agent known as Winter Soldier. He made the perfect assassin because he lacked his memories, but still retained his training. Eventually, Cap found out he’d been thawed out again and used a Cosmic Cube to restore all of Buck’s memories. But assuming William Hurt is game for more Ross appearances, it’s not too late to properly utilize the character going forward. The first is that Ross puts together the Thunderbolts (heh, that’s ironic), a team of reformed supervillains and anti-heroes who go on high-stakes missions. Even if the Sokovia Accords are no longer the law of the land, it’s easy to envision Ross using his own team of sanctioned operatives to carry out his agenda for either the U.S. government or a shadowy, outside party. In the comics, Ross even led the Thunderbolts for a little bit, although it wasn’t as his normal human self (more on that in a bit).
